We’re thrilled to share that Beth Ann Valavanis, founder of Apollo Academy, was recently featured in Tampa Magazine’s 2025 Women to Watch—and the story is a powerful reflection of what makes Apollo Academy so special.
After a successful career in business and a leadership role guiding purpose-driven organizations, Beth Ann found herself on a deeply personal mission: to find a school where her daughter could thrive—not just academically, but as a confident, independent, and curious human being.
When she couldn’t find that school, she built it.
Apollo Academy was born from a simple but radical question:
What if school was designed to prepare kids for the real world—not just to follow instructions, but to lead, collaborate, and think deeply?
As a learner-driven Acton affiliate, Apollo Academy does just that. Our students take ownership of their education, embrace both failure and success, and develop critical thinking and real-world skills. There are no traditional teachers, no tests, and no homework—just immersive projects, outdoor exploration, and opportunities to grow into capable, purpose-driven young people.
Beth Ann’s vision challenges the status quo and puts learners at the center of their own journey. As the Tampa Magazine article beautifully puts it, “For Valavanis, launching Apollo Academy wasn’t just about starting a school—it was about reshaping education.”
That’s the mission we live every day.
🎉 Congratulations to Beth Ann on this well-deserved recognition!
